Son of the previous firemaker for a prehistoric tribe. Za assumed the leadership of the tribe after his father's death, but this was contested by Kal, his main rival. Despite the support of both his mother and his beloved, Hur, Za lacked the ability to create fire successfully. When the secret was given to him by the Doctor, he tried to keep the TARDIS crew with the tribe. He defeated Kal in combat and so remained leader of the tribe after the Doctor escaped.
