Inhabitants of the planet Delta Magna, the green-skinned humanoid Swampies were a peaceful if primitive race. They lived on the marshlands and worshipped the cephalopod creature they named Kroll. When mankind discovered Delta Magna's rich methane atmosphere, they began to cover the planet in refineries and colonies, much needed as Earth was becoming uninhabitable. The effect was to dislocate the Swampies, destroying their culture. Under pressure from ecology groups, the companies responsible for the refineries moved the entire Swampie race to a similar world, Delta Magna's third moon. Before too long, the companies realised that this moon also offered useful methane supplies and as Delta Magna's supply began to run out, they transferred their attention to the moon. Once again, the Swampies were affected, especially as an experimental methane catalytic refinery was constructed there. They were contacted by a gun-runner, who armed them with gas-powered rifles to enable the Swampies to force mankind off the moon. Then Kroll arose from the bottom of the swamp, unable to tell the difference between Swampy and human, and ate anything he could. After the Doctor defeated Kroll, the humans and Swampies had to negotiate together to share the moon.
