shrivenzales
Inhabitants of the planet Ribos. The carnivorous Shrivenzales were ferocious dragon-like creatures that lived in the subterranean passages, or catacombs, that networked the city of Shur. A Shrivenzale was also on permanent guard duty outside the Relic Room of Shur, and at night it presided over the Relics, where it would kill anyone who tried to enter. The Shrivenzales were attended to by the Riban Shrieves, guards whose duties included this task amongst their other duties. Romana, on her first mission alongside the Doctor, to locate the Key to Time, was attacked by a Shrivenzale. It had been drugged by the human conman Unstoffe, who had planted a lump of Jethrik in the Relic Room. The Jethrik was in fact the disguised first segment of the Key to Time. When the Doctor and Romana were trapped in the catacombs, hiding from the Graff Vynda-K and his soldiers, the threat of awakening the Shrivenzales was always present. At one point, the Doctor had to hide in a chamber with a skeleton for company while a Shrivenzale tried to sniff him out.
