Mutated sentient seaweed existed around the North Sea, gradually dominating the minds of those on rigs attempting to harness natural gas. The seaweed created lethal foam that could spread over the rigs and to on-shore bases. It deployed transformed human agents such as Mr Oak and Mr Quill to carry out its work. The Doctor discovered that the seaweed was susceptible to high frequency sonics and could be destroyed when bombarded with the amplified screams of Victoria Waterfield. Once the seaweed was destroyed, the rigs could continue harnessing the planet's natural gases.
