Cliff Jones was a Welsh scientist determined to seek alternative sources of food and power to stop humanity destroying Earth. He and Jo Grant became close friends while the Doctor investigated Global Chemicals and its connection with the spate of deaths in the local mining community. By accident, Jones discovered a cure for the bite of the lethal Giant Maggots that the chemical spills had created. When they were destroyed, he asked Jo to marry him and accompany him on a journey down the Amazon. She agreed, and the Doctor presented them with the Blue Crystal from Metebelis III as a wedding gift.
