Inhabitants of the planet Solos, the Mutants, were the native Solonians going through a natural evolutionary stage. The Solonian seasons were five hundred years long. The evolutionary process normally occured slowly and naturally during the course of seasonal change. However, the experiments conducted on the Solonian atmosphere by the Marshal accelerated the process. Frightened by the sudden changes, the mutated Solonians became aggressive, while those as yet unchanged assumed their friends had become monsters. The Doctor was sent to Solos to help a Solonian, Ky, evolve into the superbeing that all Solonians would eventually become, and so lead his people out from under the Marshal's tyranny.
