mire beasts
Cephalopod inhabitants of Aridius, a desert planet which had once been a beautiful world of deep oceans. A change of orbit had taken the planet closer to its twin suns, evaporating the oceans and sending the civilised Aridians beneath the sandy surface, where they were forced to conserve as much water as possible. The Mire Beasts also required water to survive, lurking in dark, damp slimy caverns and eating any Aridian unwary enough to get close. When the Daleks arrived on Aridius, chasing the Doctor and the TARDIS crew, part of the entrance to the Aridian underground city was destroyed. This enabled some Mire Beasts to enter the city and begin attacking the Aridians, including Malsan, an Aridian who had attempted to help the TARDIS crew. After the Daleks left the planet in pursuit of the Doctor, the Mire Beasts remained a major threat to the safety of the Aridians.
