Probably the most powerful device in the Universe. It was created and operated by the Guardians of Time, beings vastly superior to other super races such as the Time Lords or the Eternals. When assembled properly, the Key gives the possessor the ability to stop the Universe and influence it in any way of their choosing. Normally it was in the safe hands of the White Guardian although his opposite number, the Black Guardian, also sought to control it. The White Guardian gave the Doctor, K9 and Romana the task of locating the six disguised segments, needing to place them back together and thus ensure the Universe was correctly balanced between calm and chaos. The six segments were disguised as a lump of Jethrik on Ribos, a planet, a statue on Tara, the Great Seal of Diplos (stolen by the criminal Cessair and taken to Earth), a religious artifact (swallowed by Kroll on the third moon of Delta Magna) and Princess Astra of Atrios. The Black Guardian attempted to deceive the Doctor into handing the Key over to him, but after allowing the White Guardian enough time to restore order, the Doctor dispersed it once again, earning the Black Guardian's eternal enmity.
