When the Doctor encountered Wells, he was a young man at the beginnings of his writing career. The Doctor was tracking a young Karfelon noblewoman, Vena, who had hurled herself into a device called the Timelash. Vena arrived outside Wells' log cabin and warned him not to trust those who followed. However, convinced by the Doctor's good intentions, the three returned to Karfel and overthrew Magellan, or the Borad, who was trying to destroy the Karfelons and replace them with creatures such as himself. The Doctor returned Wells to Earth, where he adapted many aspects of this adventure into a number of novels.
