doomsday weapon
The ancient civilisation which once flourished on the planet Uxarieus built a vast weapon that was controlled from the heart of their city. Firing it could destroy vast quantities of the Universe - the Crab Nebula was the direct result of it once being fired. However, the radiation that leaked from the weapon contaminated both the planet and the people. As the planet withered, so the survivors eked out a primitive existence beneath the surface. Only a guardian, worshipped by the Uxariens, recalled the truth. He showed the Doctor how to destroy the weapon and was killed when it was obliterated in the resultant detonation.
