Leader of the Voords, one of the disparate races and cultures that inhabited the planet Marinus. He sought absolute power of the planet and its people via the aged Conscience of Marinus, a huge computer which oversaw the population. Yartek had the Keeper of the Conscience, Arbitan, murdered. He assumed his place when the Doctor arrived, having collected the keys necessary to operate the Conscience. Pretending to be the Keeper, Yartek told Sabetha, Arbitan's daughter, that the machine's power had injured him, meaning that she could not get close. Ian Chesterton also appeared to believe this story, giving Yartek the final key the Voord leader required. However, this was a fake and the Conscience exploded, killing Yartek and many of his Voords in the blast.
