A caveman from Earth's prehistory who contested the leadership of a tribe led by Za, son of the previous firemaker. Kal witnessed the Doctor lighting his pipe and so kidnapped him in an effort to learn the secret of creating fire. After murdering the previous firemaker's widow, Kal was defeated and killed by Za in combat.
