discovery of the reptile people
An underground research project in Derbyshire was built unwittingly atop one of the shelters inhabited by Earth's original civilisation, a group of reptile people known as Silurians. Power from the base was being siphoned off to reactivate the hibernating reptiles. One faction of the reptile people agreed to co-exist with humanity, another, far stronger, wanted to exterminate them. The latter used a virulent virus to attempt genocide, although the Doctor and Liz Shaw found a cure. The reptiles were then resealed inside their caves by UNIT. Later, colonies of reptiles called Sea Devils were discovered in undersea bases.
