Richard the Lionheart's campaign to have the Saracen hordes in Palestine converted to Christianity. Prior to the Third Crusade, the Doctor and Vicki became embroiled in court politics. Richard intended to have his sister Joanna marry Saphadin, brother of the Saracen ruler Saladin. Joanna was informed of this plan, and Richard blamed the Doctor, who was duped into betraying his confidence. The real culprit was the Earl of Leicester. Barbara Wright was rescued from the Saracens by Ian Chesterton, knighted by Richard as Sir Ian of Jaffa.
