After millions of years, primitive man worshipped the god Orb, who bestowed the gifts of firemaking on a few chosen people. When the firemaker of one particular tribe died, his son, Za, desperately tried to keep control over the tribe by making fire, but failed. When the Doctor arrived and lit his pipe with matches, Za saw him as the solution to his troubles. Even after the Doctor showed him how to produce fire, Za kept the TARDIS crew in a cave but they escaped, leaving the tribe to survive without their help.
