black hole of tartarus
A huge black hole, towards which the Hyperion III was steered by Bruchner, one of Professor Lasky's assistants. He had realised that the only way to rid the universe of the terror of the Vervoids was to pilot the liner into the black hole, and complete destruction. Despite the crew's best attempts, Bruchner could not be dissuaded from his course, but the Vervoids themselves filled the bridge with their own poisonous fumes, killing him. This enabled two Mogarians, who did not need to breath oxygen, to enter the bridge, and move the luxury ship out of danger.
